Onto today's post. I have been thinking a lot recently about how to tie together the various elements of mindset and attitude that I regularly discuss and refer to. I'm yet to find a tidy model so have been trying to work on a way of packing these elements together myself. What follows is my first attempt at this. The idea is to give you 5, easy to implement, points that will help take your thinking, and subsequent success, to the next level.
1. Life isn't fair
This sounds a particularly negative way to start a post about positive mindsets but this is such a crucial point. If you start from a point where you understand that bad things will happen then you are prepared and the impact of these negative situations is lessened. Sometimes things will happen that make you question everything and will make you want to give in. A 'woe is me' attitude will not get you anywhere, realising that negative situations are a part of life allows you to move on, grow and eventually succeed.
2. You can't control everything
As much as we wish we could we cannot control traffic, weather, markets or other people. Worrying about these elements is therefore a complete waste of time. Don't be reactive, getting pissed off at things beyond your control. Instead focus your energy on controlling the controllables.
3. You can control your attitude
No matter how desperate the situation you always have control over your attitude. Learn to control it. If you are angry then that is a choice you have made. The person who cut you up in traffic isn't the one that made you angry, you took the decision to be angered by it. There are always alternative explanations for things, don't seek the ones that result in you feeling bad.
4. You can find positives in every situation
Learn how to reframe. Every situation can be given a positive spin, even in the darkest moments there is always an opportunity to learn or practice a virtue. There is no such thing as a hopeless situation. Hopelessness is a choice and not a very good one.
5. Difficult situations accelerate you towards success
If you are able to follow and practice the 4 points above then you should seek the disorder. The hottest fires create the strongest steel. Throw yourself into challenges knowing that you can't fail. The more times you stumble the faster success will come.
I hope that the above points have given you food for thought. I have called them the steps to building a base attitude as it is your attitude that determines your success in every walk of life, from business to your health. The attitude described above is robust and designed for growth, it will help you achieve success in whatever area you choose. If you have any points that you feel should be included, any questions on anything mentioned here or just a suggestion for a catchier name then please get in touch via the comments or social media.
